Sauna Code of Conduct
When visiting us, we ask that you please read and follow these conditions so that everyone visiting has an enjoyable and safe experience.
The Three Pillars
1. Respect
Identities, boundaries & consent – at all times.
2. Hygiene
Swimwear below the waist, sit on a towel, shower before plunging.
3. Calm
Look after our shared space for relaxation and reflection.
01 / Respect
Identities, boundaries & consent.
Bristol Community Sauna is a welcoming space open to the whole community.
- Don't assume people's gender. If you don't know what pronouns someone uses, ask them first.
- If someone has declined the offer of additional heat, steam, aromatherapy, or even conversation, please respect that.
- Inside the sauna is a phone-free zone. Leave your phone outside. Always ask consent before taking pictures.
- Please refrain from commenting on or staring at other people's bodies and tattoos. Even compliments can have the wrong effect.
We currently host monthly Trans-only and Queer-only sessions and are in the process of further expanding our diversity of targeted sessions.
02 / Hygiene
Swimwear below the waist, sit on a towel, shower before plunging.
Top-half swimwear is optional in regular sessions. We don’t enforce any distinction based on gender presentation or identity. Swimwear below the waist is required in every session.
- Everyone needs to wear robes and footwear when not in the sauna area (for example, going to the toilet, café or through the building).
- Please shower before you plunge. By rinsing off, you are helping to ensure the water stays fresh for all.
- Please sit on a towel whilst in the sauna to help maintain hygiene and comfort for everyone. Bring two towels: one to sit on and one to dry yourself with.
- Do not use towels to “reserve” spaces.
-
Please don’t use shampoo, soap or conditioner whilst using the outdoor showers as the water runs off and feeds plants and birds.
03 / CALM
Look after our shared relaxation space.
St Anne’s House is a mixed-use building. The café, studios and other tenants share these walls so please be mindful of that.
- The sauna space is a place intended for people to relax and recuperate. Keep this in mind while using the sauna.
- Please respect others’ right to peace and quiet. Be aware of the volume, tone and type of conversations you are having in the sauna.
- If you book onto a ‘Silent’ session, please maintain silence within the sauna.
- Bristol Community Sauna is a nonsexual space. No intimate contact or kissing please.
- If you plan on using aromatherapy or essential oils, please check with your sauna companions first, as they can affect other customers’ safety. Ask a member of staff for advice on safe usage.
